Going, going, GONE!

Maisy, wants new furniture in the living room.

In order to do that I had to sell the existing pieces.

Well.....someone bought them yesterday.

YAY!!!

As you can see it is kinda modern.
That was Maisy's style in the old house.

The things I loved about this furniture was that is was very comfy and you could get ANY, and I mean, ANY stain out of it.

Now on to the dilemma....
I want slip covered furniture.

I know, I know everyone goes to Ikea and buys their slip covered furniture.
I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for.
Every time hubby and I go into that store we sit on the couch. It just feels like the boards are touching the back of my knees when I sit down.
I soooo badly want to like it. I mean for $500 you can get a couch.
I just can't do it.
I think Ikea is good for people just starting out.
I mean that is where we take our kids shopping for their college apartments.
It's also great for little things around the house.....such as storage items, wine glasses, candles or throw blankets. I think it would also be a great place to buy all the items needed to redo a kitchen or bath on a budget.

Ok....now that I got that off my chest.....
honestly, I didn't even know it was on my chest...

I'm off to check out Consumer Reports to see what they recommend.
Wouldn't it be HILARIOUS if they recommended Ikea's Ektorp couch(see I even know the name of the couch. That tells you how many times I have tried to convince myself to get it).

Hope you all had a great weekend!!

Umm, yes,,,, I think Ikea is for those starting out. It's not furniture that will last or you will still want to use even 5 years from now... *can you say J U N K?*

You get what you pay for so go for the gusto when buying furniture.

From a recent IKEA owner....I will fully let you say *I TOLD YOU SO* when it falls apart on me.

I can't wait to see what you replace it with - I know that PB has great stuff, looks like IKEA, but not.

xoxoxo to you, I miss you!

You spoke my mind. I have sat in the Ektorp many a time myself and I just can't convince myself to buy it. I have been shopping for a sofa and loveseat for my living room for a bout a year now. I want one that I can sit on. Not lay back on or feel like "Edith Ann" on. Some of the PB furniture is quite deep - keep that in mind. ~ Robyn

I understand what your saying about the couch from Ikea but I wouldn't call it my starter couch but I would call it my not feeling guilty to get rid of couch when I get tired of it, LOL!! Good luck with your new couches.

That is so funny, Amy. I really laughed at your post. You see, we bought a big slipcovered Montauk sofa for our city house living room, one of those down-filled, sink into the cushions sofas. My mom HATED sitting in it and kept complaining about it, so we moved it to the farmhouse living room and replaced it with a white-slipcovered Ektorp for the city house (still being poor from buying the Montauk) and my mom is now happy. Go figure. But you're definitely right, if you can afford better quality, go for it!

don't cave to the ektorp...EVERY time I've bought furniture at ikea, I've been disappointed.

Though, my brother and sister in law have a super-cool looking ikea kitchen cabinets, and they are great...so, you never know!

I so know what you mean. I would much rather have something that is comfortable and will withstand wear and tear, than something that just LOOKS like what I want!

JC Penney carries a line called Linden Street, and it is beautiful. Very Pottery Barn-esque. I've thought about buying a piece, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Mainly, because I have no idea what it would feel like if I ordered it! I love the look of slip-covered furniture too. It's just not very practical with a 19 month old!

I can't wait to see what you get! I'm sure it will be beautiful. BTW, I hope you're not having to sit on the floor for the time being! haha

Good luck with the new furniture! I know you will find something great!

You make me giggle! I hear ya on the Ikea stuff. I sure love the idea of immediate gratification but I can't help it that I'll save for 20 years to get that Pottery Barn sectional in microsuede....ONE DAY!!!

Are those IKEA curtains I spy??! ;) I wonder if any of these slipcovers would happen to be the right size? (I know chances are probably slim, but it's worth investigating, I think):

Slipcovered furniture is beautiful, so expensive though. We looked into it before we bought our current set but I didn't want to pay the price since we still have small kids. Someday though I'll get that beautiful slipcovered sofa! A friend of mine was able to score a sofa that was a floor model for a great price. Maybe visit showrooms regularly and see if you can find one that way?

I'm so happy I switched to white slip covered couches! I got mine off the floor at pottery barn for cheaper. They were dirty so I had to wash it first. but i saved like 800 dollars so who cares if you have to wash it??? But it sounds like you already sold your furniture so you need something right away! New furniture is so fun!

You are so funny! I love Ikea for the wood and metal items, like our bedframe is better quality than I can buy locally with their multi planks of support under the mattress, most top dollar places only give you three planks! But for the couches, I am not big on their quality.
We also just pitched our "getting by"
furniture--actually we sold it in 24 hours thank you Craigslist! Then we bought a sectional and we love it! Good luck on finding the perfect thing for your room and taste! :)

That would be funny! But I'm so like you! I remember our first couch and would die a hundred deaths if we had it now!! It was awful, but all three pieces were $500. How horrible. So glad we moved up some in the world! Enjoy!

Well, I know it isn't "trendy" to say this. But my husband always says: You get what you pay for.

A friend of mine owned two of the Pottery Barn couches (PB Basic) and they were very soft and squishy. She was short and found them to be too deep for her to be comfortable. I have a huge white slipcovered sofa in storage that I love and is perfect for my six foot height. I am just too cheap to pay for a new slipcover ($600) as the old ones are threadbare but still pretty.
I recently purchased the Ektorp corner sofa and it is NOT comfy. But it fits my space perfectly, the kids climb all over it, they love, and its slipcover is washable and cheap to replace. They are made WELL, there is down in the cushions.
It really just depends what you are buying the new sofa for, for utility or beauty or comfort.
Love your blog, can't wait to see what it brings.
I'm moving soon, and would love you to give me any advice you think I need...

You CAN get a quality sofa for $799! And that price is NOT unreasonable. Trust me... Ikea is cheap, uncomfortable furniture, as is Ashley! But they can have the price points. It's all what you can afford to buy. But let me tell you, if someone is willing to spend $900 on one of Ikea's sofas, they are nuts! They don't even come close to the quality of some of the $499 ones I sell in our furniture store. You can get a decent buy there on SOME things, but not much. Seriously, research your brand names. Not sure where you're located. E-mail me if you would like more info. Maybe I can help.
